It was a little while after the second semester started, right after I had recovered from my summer-vacation blues and had begun falling back into my normal routine.

After school, the principal came up to Usami and me. Outside, it was still as bright as if it was noon.

“Usami, Mr. Hitoma, please follow me to my office. I have important news.”

Like usual, his tone sounded somewhat joking, but he was wearing an odd expression.

He wants Usami, too?

Is he going to give her a warning about her behavior? No, that can’t be it.

From my perspective as her homeroom teacher, I felt that the only thing Usami could stand to improve was her choice of words. As far as class went, she was always serious about her studies. It wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say she made no mistakes. As for her language, to my knowledge, it wasn’t a major problem. I gave her light warnings whenever she went too far.

Then, what could the principal want? Usami lacked her usual energy and followed the principal to his office quietly.

“…What? Stop staring at me,” she snapped.

Oh, good. There’s the fire I expect from her.

“Go on in,” the principal urged us.

The wax figure who I had met during my interview was standing in a corner of the room as always. The expensive-looking decorations glittered.

Every time I came here, I was struck anew by the tastelessness of the room.

Huh? Did he get more wax figures? Was the one by the door there the last time I was here…?

Strangely, my steps seemed to drag. In contrast, Usami flitted quickly to the chairs in the reception space in the middle of the room and plopped into one. I sat down next to her.

The principal eased himself into the seat facing us. He took his time to speak.

“I have news about Seiko Kizaki.”

Seiko who?

Usami leaped up and slammed her hands down on the desk. “Did something happen to Seiko?” she demanded, shoving herself forward. She looked about ready to grab the principal.

Usami was so close to him, he must’ve been able to feel her breath on his face. But he was unperturbed by the distance and continued calmly. “…The director received word about her. She’s not young anymore, and her health has been declining. Recently, when she went in for a checkup, she was diagnosed with a serious illness. She’s been admitted to the hospital.”

“…How is she doing?” Usami asked.

“It’s not looking good.”

Usami went rigid. Her eyebrows furrowed, and her lips flattened into a line.

“…Seiko…,” she mumbled, her voice trailing off. Her face was downturned. She balled her hands on the desk into fists.

“Therefore, after consulting with the director, we’ve decided to grant you a special privilege.”

Usami’s head snapped up. Anticipation and anxiety mingled on her face. “Special privilege…?”

“Two hours’ leave.”

“I can go and meet Seiko?!” she blurted out excitedly.

But the principal’s expression was still dark. “Yes, however”—his glasses glinted eerily—“not in your current state. You will have to meet with her as you looked prior to enrolling at this school.
